To highlight the importance of Earth Day that takes place on April 22, 2019, several social media platforms released tools to raise awareness and engagement.
Twitter’s New “Hashflags”
To start with, Twitter released a new collection of ‘hashflags’-that are hashtags with automatic emojis attached to promote alertness and interaction.
As explained by Twitter:
“We’ve built and launched an emoji in celebration of #EarthDay that highlights key campaigns people are driving on Twitter including #ClimateAction, #EarthRise, and #VoteEarth. We’ve also donated pro bono advertising credits under our #AdsForGood program to help promote efforts leading up to Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary.”
In addition, Twitter is taking steps to improve the environment in San Francisco, where the company is based, with a goal of achieving 100% carbon-neutral power supply in its data centers by the end of 2022.
Snapchat’s Eye-Opening Lens
As for Snapchat, a new Lens was invented to encourage more people to become conscious and start taking climate action, showing users how the world would look like in 2100 if no action is taken.
Youtube’s Environmental Vloggers
Several vloggers in the environmental field, including sustainable fashion and lifestyles, were featured on YouTube.
The role of these communication channels is very important because they are the eyes of people across the globe, and they have the power to highlight international matters. If they create a unified message then the strength of the content increases. Take an active part and engage in these tools on Earth Day to create a voice that calls for climate action and is involved in raising awareness.
